Walter Martin of New York based band The Walkmen talks Lisbon the place and Lisbon the album.

You've called your new album Lisbon as a small thank you and tribute to the hospitality of the Portuguese, but how and why did you decide on Lisbon as opposed to any other European city?

We had a few great trips there in fantastic rainy weather. No other city in Europe has embraced us the way they did in Lisbon. To The Walkmen, Lisbon represents hope.

If you had to do a travel guide for Lisbon, what would you note down as the Top 3 things to do/see?

Walk around the Barrio Alto neighborhood.
Check out the buildings in Baixa.
Climb the hill up to the fort (Castelo de São Jorge) and look out over the whole city.

Tell us a fun fact about Lisbon the place:

The city got a great deal on cobblestones so every sidewalk in the whole place is cobblestone and beautiful.

What are you most looking forward to most during your tour of the UK with the Black Keys?

I love London. I want to go back to the National Portrait Gallery. I went a couple years ago and thought it was the best museum I'd seen in ages.

Any chance your next album will be called - Bournemouth or Newcastle, or any other place on the UK tour?

We love Brighton, so maybe that could be a consideration.

Where in the world do you want to go to that you haven't yet been?

I would like to go to Istanbul and see the Hagia Sophia cathedral.

Elizabeth Spiridakis of the blog White Lightning designed the artwork for your new album. She also did the artwork for your You & Me album, why did you ask her to do this one too?

She works with my wife and is a good friend. We loved what she did with You & Me so we signed her up again.

If you had to design the album cover, what do you think you would have featured?

I'd do exactly what she did. We worked very closely with her on both covers. We basically gave her photographs and told her to make it look nice.

The Walkmen did a track-by-track cover of Harry Nilsson and John Lennon's 1974 album Pussy Cats. If you had to do another cover album and could pick any artist - which one would you choose?

I'd like to cover a Cass McCombs record. I just got into him and I think he writes great songs.

Finally, we have to ask as you were in an episode of The O.C. - Who would you have dated - Marissa or Summer?

I don't know anything about The O.C. except that right after we were on it, it started to get less popular.
