Ten artists, ten designs, lots of books. We asked a group of designers to each design a bookmark that we could give away with each book purchased. This is what they came up with...

Favourite book of all time:
Always changing. The Yiddish Policeman's Union by Michael Chabon, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer, or A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers are usually the three I switch between.

Favourite author(s) of all time:
George Saunders, Haruki Murakami, Jonathan Safran Foer, Michael Chabon and Dave Eggers.

Commuter or bedtime reader:
My commute is a 30-minute walk, so definitely a bedtime reader.

How do you bookmark your page: Use a bookmark or corner folder?
Folding pages is heresy! Bookmarks all the way.

Story behind your design:
A cast of characters for a novel I could see being pretty great.

ndy J. Miller is a graphic illustrator working out of the Midwest in the USA. Miller grew up in Indiana, spent a few years in Western New York and also studied in the UK for college. Miller's style is heavily influenced from a childhood full of superheroes, Charlie Brown, Dr. Seuss, Jim Henson, and Shel Silverstein. The independent music scene also plays a major role in his work as seen in his book The Indie Rock Coloring Book. Miller's illustration consists of penciled line work, bright and vibrant colors, exciting bendy characters and new ideas.

Favourite book of all time:
Non-Fiction: Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller. Fiction: The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

Favourite author(s) of all time:
That's a hard question because I don't really read fiction often, therefore I am afraid by answering such a question I might run the risk of looking like a bit of a fool if I answer with some modern non-fiction writer, which is mostly what I read. But Dr. Seuss is probably up there.

Commuter or bedtime reader:
Commuter reader all the way! That's when I get all my reading in. I am so busy and burning the candle at both ends I never have time to read at night, I go lay down and when my head hits the pillow I'm out! I do read in the bath but... that doesn't sound very manly at all.

How do you bookmark your page: Use a bookmark or corner folder?
Oh I am so ashamed, corner folder every time. What a heathen I am ruining perfectly good literature.

Story behind your design:
I wanted it to feel like a journey through many types of stories. The roads represent that, and the bicycle wheel coming out to the owl's eye is like saying 'from this story to that'. Castles, trees, woodland creatures and the like it's all there.

wen Gatley hails from the majestic foothills of the Malverns (home to Malvern Spring Water, Morgan Cars, Elgar and where Tolkien was inspired to write Lord of the Rings). Owen gets most of his inspiration from 50s, 60s and 70s posters, advertisements and comics, and he enjoys working in both 2D and 3D with paper models and pop ups. As well as this, he has also recently gotten into animation, something he is keen to develop. Aside from illustrating, he enjoys listening to Black Metal and creating music. He recently bought a banjo and hopes to be as good as Steve Martin one day.

Favourite book of all time:
If I'm allowed a trilogy, His Dark Materials By Philip Pullman.

Favourite author(s) of all time:
Hunter S. Thompson, Daniel Clowes.

Commuter or bedtime reader:
Bedtime reader.

How do you bookmark your page: Use a bookmark or corner folder?
Corner folder, I always lose my bookmark.

Story behind your design:
Life in a quiet fishing town carries on, blissfully unaware of its impending attack from alien travellers. I wanted my bookmark to have a narrative to reflect story telling and I'm a sucker for dramatic irony.

oe McLaren is an illustrator and artist who lives and works in the middle of a big marsh in North Kent with his small wife. He graduated from the Brighton University BA Illustration course in 2003 and regularly contributes illustrations to The Times, WIRED and the FT. He finds inspiration in Eastern-European folk-art, camping, and the work of amateur potters and children's horror television programmes from the 1970s.

Favourite book of all time:
The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper. It's a children's fantasy novel written in the '70s. I read it every Christmas.

Favourite author(s) of all time:
Anthony Burgess, particularly for the Enderby books.

Commuter or bedtime reader:
I'm lucky enough not to have to commute, but I always read on train journeys, and in the bath.

How do you bookmark your page: Use a bookmark or corner folder?
I'm ashamed to say I do fold page-corners, despite having a lot of bookmarks. Unforgivable.

Story behind your design:
I love books that create a self-contained little world, and I also like the idea of a bookmark being like a guardian, watching faithfully over your page until you return. So this is an exciting castle tower for a story to take place in, and it's also a smartly mustachioed guardsman looking after your book.

ike Lemanski was born in 1986 within the rolling hills of West Yorkshire. He studied design and illustration at the Bradford School of Arts where he gained a first-class degree. Lemanski's work spans a number of areas from illustration to typography, to more direct studies and investigation. He creates a sense of realism in his work, exploring ideas and concepts, finding things that interest him and responding whichever way seems best. He is currently living and working as a freelance illustrator/designer from the hills of his home town, where he is working on a picture book for kids, and a design venture called the New Leaves Studio.

Favourite book of all time:
My favourite book of all time would have to be The Art of Looking Sideways by the late Alan Fletcher.

Favourite author(s) of all time:
I would have to say Franz Kafka, but the work of Chris Ware is also amazing, he's a great artist and writer.

Commuter or bedtime reader:
I used to be a commuter reader, but I now work from home which makes my commute about 6 feet (bed to desk) so I'd have to say bedtime! With a good cup of darjeeling.

How do you bookmark your page: Use a bookmark or corner folder?
I can't imagine ever folding a page over! I don't get people who do that. I used to use old train tickets, now I tend to use old scraps of paper with random notes I've made like 'drink more water' and such.

Story behind your design:
The idea behind the design was: 'What if all your clothes came to life when you were out and they too liked to read and write?' - like a book club for your wares.

im Datz is an illustrator and designer who grew up on the beaches of southern New Jersey. He majored in Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, and after a few very lucky breaks, slid sideways into Graphic Design (and never looked back). He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, where his small multidisciplinary practice - Neither Fish Nor Fowl - manages a diverse range of projects for clients of every size; particularly those who hold a similar interest in elevating the market's demand for excellence.

Favourite book of all time:
Tie between Burning Chrome by William Gibson, and Within the Context of No Context by George W.S. Trow. Different CONtent, similar INtent.

Favourite author(s) of all time:
William Gibson, JG Ballard, Martin Amis, Legs McNeil, Lucy Lippard, Georges Perec, Jeff Noon, Italo Calvino.

Commuter or bedtime reader:
Both!

How do you bookmark your page: Use a bookmark or corner folder?
A folded top corner marks where I last stopped reading. A folded bottom corner marks a page worth revisiting someday. I can tell by looking at the edge of the book exactly how much I liked it.

Story behind your design:
Oh, just a little tome totem to hold your page while you do something less important.

Favourite book of all time:
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson.

Favourite author(s) of all time:
William S. Burroughs, Hunter S Thompson, Allen Ginsberg.

Commuter or bedtime reader:
An afternoon reader.

How do you bookmark your page: Use a bookmark or corner folder?
I like my books to know they're being read - I'm a folder.

Story behind your design:
Some people say that the book is always better than the film, but what if the book isn't as good as the poster for the film? This is an homage to the great movie posters of the '80s; bringing a little slice of Hollywood to your very own book.

Favourite author(s) of all time:
Haruki Murakami, Margaret Atwood, Alexander Pope, Oscar Wilde.

Commuter or bedtime reader:
Definitely a bedtime reader.

How do you bookmark your page: Use a bookmark or corner folder?
Neither, I usually just remember the page number.

Story behind your design:
I'm such a colossal nerd and I just really liked the correlation between saving your progress in a video game and marking your page in a book.

im Stoten's drawings consist of vast, intricate landscapes which are filled with the lives of tuba playing elephants, joyful, dancing robots and crocodiles eating ice cream. The buildings often chat to each other, the town mayor drives a huge floating diamond-shaped car while an enormous gorilla drinks tea with an erudite hedgehog. Over the last several years Jim's unique world has featured in commissions for an impressive list of clients including MTV, Levi's, Urban Outfitters and The Guardian, whilst he frequently exhibits his work in galleries around the globe.

Bedtime.

How do you bookmark your page: Use a bookmark or corner folder?
Fold the corner.

Story behind your design:
With books any subject can be covered, so I wanted to create a bookmark filled with many different things, and put it all under the sea because in a book anything is possible.
