Greetings From Rober Loeber

We're a talented bunch over at U.O Europe don't you know. So we thought we'd introduce you to our Junior Graphic Designer, resident BMXer, and budding magazine mogul Robert Loeber. We keep him pretty busy at work, so where he finds the time to oversee his 'zine – Sticks & Stones - we just don’t know. Never without his trusty camera, Rob takes us around all his favourite haunts in his old University stomping ground - Manchester.

Name: Robert Loeber

Hometown: Garstang, Lancashire, UK

What do you do? I’m a graphic designer, maker of magazines and a rider of small bikes.

Describe Manchester in 3 words:
Small, Friendly & Northern!

What do you love about the city?
For me a city is all about exploration. I never feel like I know a city until I've explored all the back streets. Manchester is no exception to this. It actually took me three attempts to find the bar - Common. It looks like you are walking into a block of houses, but take a sharp left and you'll find an amazing little bar filled with walls covered in art. I love all the hidden gems that you would never find unless you had a little faith in getting lost. It's the only way to truly see everything. I enjoy the art and music community that is the Northern Quarter. It's so close to all the hustle and bustle of touristville, but if you didn't know where to look you would have no idea it even existed. Exploring Manchester on bike is also a treat. Being a BMXer, it's a common thing to always be on the look out for new spots, but you definitely see a different side of a city... I never realised Manchester was so small.

What would be an ideal day for you in Manchester?
The sun would shining; I would start the day off with a mid-morning breakfast at Katsouris then move onto riding some street spots all around the city until the afternoon. I would shoot a few photos along the way, then savour the last few hours of sunlight at the end of the day with some nice beers and friends in the Northern Quarter; then finish the night with either a gig or the cinema.

What would you like to do/see in Manchester that you haven't had the chance to do yet?
Well I haven't checked out the new set up at Central Skate Park. They tend to rip sections out and re-link the space every few months, and the new thing looks like too much fun! A friend of my mine was telling me about 'Subversive Spaces' (On till May 4, 2009) at The Whitworth Art Gallery where you go round a pitch black maze in the darkness and have to find your way out.

If you could create a soundtrack for Manchester what songs would be on it?
It would mostly likely remind me of my university years, and would probably be made up of all the bands I saw while I was there. It would probably include Animal Collective, Postal Service, Modest Mouse, Sigur Ros, Menomena... the list would go on for a long time.

Most memorable moment in Manchester:
It would have to be when Sufjan Stevens played in 2007. I only ended up getting a ticket for the sold out show on the day of the gig. I proceeded to watch Sufjan in his 'Come on feel the Illinoise!' uniform, jumping to the aid of one of his guitar techs as he fell off the stage and broke his ankle. Who know Sufjan was a First Aider! He then blew my mind by playing to a completely silent room on a grand piano wearing giant bird wings. Suf's the man!
