What is DTAM™ and what does it stand for?
Dtam™ is my design alias, graphic platform and self managed design studio.
Dtam™ once was an abbreviation of 'Deathtoallmankind™' this was a metaphor that suggested a positive response to the end of creation and that something new would replace what once was - in life and in turn design. It all got a bit heavy and conceptual so I dropped the full title and Dtam™ was born. The Trademark symbol is used to indicate Dtam is a product and service for public use. "Dtam for the People™"

Who or what inspires you / your work?
The staples in both cases are Art, Design, Music, Film, History, Nature and Environment. Futurism, Abstract Expressionism, Modernism / Post Modernism, New Brutalism, Punk Rock, Electronic, acoustic music new and old, films of all genres from the blockbusters to 1980's USA-JP slasher /splatter movies. In between 1970-'80 was a good decade for film. I recommend anyone to look into their favourite genres within this period, you won't be disappointed. My whole life is design lead, so it's important for me to find these attributes in everyday objects and my own environment. In full it's what helps me function as a human being and a designer.

Best project you've worked on and why?
The cliché is your last work is your best. In this case it's very true. I've just completed a project with Leeds based progressive rock band Messina - 1000 bespoke handmade CD singles. The contents include two reversed printed transparencies sandwiched between is a super thick slab of eskoboard, and sealed in a 229x162mm anti-static metallic envelope.
I tried to capture the complexity and purity of the music and capture the running conceptual elements of the band, and make something that the user could interact with. I'm really pleased with the outcome.

As a Graphic Designer, which is you Favourite font?
NB Grotesk
By Neubau Berlin: Features +3645 Kerning pairs, capital spacing and both proportional and tabular digits. Mmmmm.
Soon there will be an italic version added to the family; perfect for all modernists who fancy a change.

Which font most offends you other than Comic Sans - because let's face it Comic Sans offends everyone.
Ha ha! I've got to an age where I think

"Yeah, I could work with Comic Sans" I'd enjoy the challenge. Maybe I'd commission a reality TV makeover show where over the space of a week, Comic Sans would shack up with Helvetica and other modern favourites for comparative analysis.
If I had to pick one it would be Arial. No one likes a cheat.

If you weren't a lecturer, what do you think you would be doing?
Working in the 1960s-1980s on music design and branding. Living in the Black Forest with my wife in our Huf House with a Saab Sonett III parked on the drive.

If your students could take away one lesson from what you have taught them, what would you want it to be?
Encourage originality, take some risks and love your work. We're all pretty lucky to be in the positions we're in. The more we challenge our creativity and the technology we use be it a pen or one of those silver computers, the better the outcome for everybody.

A little birdie tells us you used to be in a band (or two) did you ever have any groupies?
Ha ha! It's mandatory in Leeds that you have a least two bands on the go, at the same

time. As near as I got to a "Groupie" is when we played a festival in Sweden some years ago. A fan asked me to sign our recently released CD. I tried my best to get myself out of the situation but to no avail. I signed the CD cover and spelt my own name wrong! Rock stardom defiantly didn't suit me.

What was the best part about being in a band? And what was the worst part?
Without stating the obvious being the music and the gigs, the best part was without a doubt the people you get to meet and places you get to visit. Most of my closest friends were met through me and my involvement within music and the bands both here in the UK and overseas.
The worst part was the physical exhaustion on tour, even in my younger years. Thousands of miles in a van mixed with late nights, early mornings, bad food and the odd pint or can of beer. Lugging your gear in and out of venues, up and down stairs, every night is Saturday night and all for thirty odd minutes of fun. Totally worth it!
