Let's get down to the nitty-gritty of getting to know you...
How long have you known each other?
Marie: I think it's about fourteen years now, but it feels like forever!
Michelle: Yup, around 14 years.
How did Kingdom of Style come into being? Did you both just sit down and decide to start a blog?
Marie: Basically it was just a written down version of what we talked about every single day. Non-stop fashion!
Michelle: We needed a project into which to channel our love of fashion and the blog was the perfect answer.
Who chose the name Kingdom of Style?
Marie: We chose it together.
Michelle: We just sat down with a piece of paper and cups of tea and eventually arrived at Kingdom of Style.
Apart from ruling Kingdom of Style, what else do you do?
Marie: Creative Director for a small design and marketing company.
Michelle: Graphic Designer and sometimes DJ.
If you weren't blogging about fashion, what do you think you would be blogging about?
Marie: I don't think I would be! Style is the only thing that gets me excited enough to want to blog.
Michelle: At a push I might have a graphic design blog, but fashion is the thing that allows me to escape my everyday life, so it's unlikely I'd want to write about anything else.
What are the perks/downsides of being prolific bloggers - if any?
Marie: The perks are all the lovely people you 'meet'. The downsides are the days you feel devoid of any inspiration at all.
Michelle: The people I have gotten to know have been amazing. It's obviously also incredible being sent clothes by the designers I gush about on the blog. But yeah, lack of inspiration is crippling and makes me feel so guilty!
As you blog about fashion, do you feel pressure to be 'fashionable'?
Marie: Can't say that I do! I always say that Queen Michelle is 'fashionable' whereas I just have my own distinct style. Sometimes, elements of it will coincide with fashion, but
that is bound to happen when you have been around as long as me!
Michelle: Not in the slightest. I explore everything and anything regardless of whether it's in fashion. I wear clothes regardless of their status as 'out' or 'in'.
We might as well ask the following questions, even though we're sure you've been asked them a billion times before, but just in case people have missed out on your answers...
Who or what inspires you?
Marie: I find inspiration everywhere. Advertising, people I pass in the street, newspapers, and other blogs. I am a nosey nosey cow and the style radar is always switched on!
Michelle: Old photos of my mum, films, colours - everything and anything can inspire me. Right now it's music that's really inspiring me.
Who are your favourite designers and why?
Marie: Marni, Dries van Noten, Helmut Lang, Vivienne Westwood, Furfur, George at Asda, Christian Lacroix Couture. I love sequins, embroidery, clothes that express
craft. Despite my best attempts, I think my inner drag queen is always struggling to break free.
Michelle: I tend to gravitate towards designers who use interesting cuts and silhouettes; anything with texture and unusual materials, or anything which might be considered quite challenging. Designers such as Jean Pierre Braganza, Txell Miras, Iris Van Herpen, Emilio de la Morena and Rick Owens are favourites.
Whose style do you most admire?
Marie: People like Anna Piaggi and the late great Diana Vreeland - women with bold, distinctive and fearless styles that are unique to them. Better to be brave than beige!
Michelle: Anyone who mixes it up. People who try different things and really experiment; Daphne Guinness is incredible.
Describe your own personal style:
Marie: Imagine an extra from Little House on the Prairie crossed with a nun and a drag queen; throw in some extra sequins, YMC sneakers and a glittering jewelled choker necklace and you've just about got it.
Michelle: Unpredictable and mixed up, but always a wee bit rock 'n' roll.
