Greetings From Alice White

Meet Alice White - the words and travel expert behind the blog Bon Voy Go There. Born and raised in the Scottish city of Edinburgh, we thought it quite appropriate that she show us around her favourite sights and sounds of the city.

Name: Alice White

Hometown: Edinburgh

What do you do? I do a lot of travelling and a lot of lying about watching TV.

Describe Edinburgh in 3 words:
Old, new and rainy.

What do you love about the city?
I guess it's a love and hate thing. Edinburgh's very, very small. It's like a village, everyone knows someone through someone else. You always know where you'll find your friends and that's such a fantastic luxury. You can walk from one side to the other in no more than an hour which is unlikely as you have lots of little boutiques and galleries to be distracted by. Finally, our famous festival!

What would be an ideal day for you in Edinburgh?
Always has to be a Sunday-funday. Lazily wander around the Grassmarket, looking in all the little shops and occasionally stopping for an outside tipple. Go find somewhere that does a top-notch roast - lots of places have ones to be proud of; Villager (on George IV Bridge) and Bon Vivant (Thistle Street) are main contenders. On the way home, battling with your food coma, go to The Stand (York Place) and watch a flavour-of-the-month comedian. I want to go do this now!

Tell us something that we probably don't know about Edinburgh?
It doesn't rain ALL the time. We have a supportive live music scene and we all support our local artists - maybe not always financially. The residents aren't all snobs either; Glaswegians might claim to be friendlier and they're all wrong, but it is safer here and more homely.

Most memorable moment in Edinburgh:
After meeting my beautiful boyfriend Andrew (he's reading over my shoulder with a sulky face on). But really, everyone remembers taking that first trip into their city centre. You're about 14 and you and a pal go into all the shops and try on all clothes that maybe your parents won’t let you. You hang around in Superdrug looking at baby blue glitter and buying handbags with kittens on them. I remember getting off the bus and looking down the length of Princes Street and thinking – 'oh my god! I'm so grown up!'

What's the weirdest thing that has happened to you or that you've seen in Edinburgh?
Edinburgh's full of unexplained gatherings and parades. There's nothing quite like turning the corner and seeing about a thousand people with fiery torches walking past in complete silence. There are loads of instances when things like this happen and you have no idea what's going on. Join in! What's the worst that could happen?

What would you like to do / see in Edinburgh that you haven't had the chance to do yet?
I've never gone to our world famous castle before. I don't really have an interest in going; I just think I should. We've got piles of heritage and history and all I seem to do is lounge around and ignore it. If you come here and love dungeons, jewels, crowns etc. there are free times to go to these relatively expensive days. Have a look here for 'Open Days'.

If you could compile a play list for wandering the streets of Edinburgh, what would be on it?
Ok this is very important. You need motivational songs; Edinburgh's entirely built on hills and you need to walk around it to get its full effect. You need power ballads. Fill your iPod with power ballads NOW!
