Soma Gallery Soma Gallery

Name: Fiona Hamilton

What do you do?
I run Soma, a small independent gallery space and shop representing a great mix of illustrators, artists and designers. We specialise in original prints and sell jewellery, magazines, textiles and ceramics as well.

Website: www.somagallery.co.uk

How did Soma Gallery come about and how long has it been going?
I really wanted to open a gallery/shop representing great artists, illustrators and designers. I was really lucky because I had the opportunity to work for a small Craft Gallery where I really learned the ropes and how to run a business. This showed me that it needn't be a pie in the sky dream, but a reality.

What does the name Soma mean?
It's a great word as it has so many meanings that apply to the gallery. My favourite is I was told that in Finnish (I think) it means something similar to 'small and cute'. And of course there's the Brave New World reference.

How do you find the artists that you feature in the gallery? Do you approach them, or do they approach you?
The majority of the artists we sell I approach, but a few approach me. I get quite a lot of applications from artists but only a very small minority is what I'm looking for. Soma is really quite small so I have to be very specific in what we sell. I tend to do a lot of searching on the internet on blogs and design sites and go to art fairs and exhibitions. It's a lot of work finding new artists!

Describe a typical day in the life of Fiona...
A typical day involves me waking up usually later than I'd like and rushing to get to work! When I get in I start the day with a cup of coffee and then check out website orders, emails and search blogs for new artists. For lunch I have a great choice of places in Clifton Village to choose from so I sometimes go to one of the great delis. The afternoon involves packing orders, braving the queues (or causing them) in the post office and updating the website. Obviously customers are dispersed amongst all of this too! After work I often watch a film curled up on the sofa.

Who or what inspires your work?
When you find fantastic artists you can't help but be inspired, especially when it's something that bit different from everything else. I try and be as switched on as possible and keep my eye out for illustrators for Soma when looking at newspapers, magazines etc. Sometimes you can find it in the least likely places.

Whose style do you most admire?
I admire Cat Power's fringe. I get fringe envy!

Describe your own personal style:
I think jewellery is probably my thing. I have a pretty good collection of Tatty Devine pieces as I have been selling them for a few years now and have accumulated a good amount. I've just got some new jewellery from Kyoko Hashimoto and her necklaces are amazing!

If you could learn to do anything; what would it be and why?
Everything - It's good to be prepared!

An oldie but a goodie of a question - If you could have any super power what would it be and why?
Without a doubt it would be flying. I'd love to be able to fly!

What's next for Soma Gallery / Fiona Hamilton?
I'd really like to have more time to do more of my own work again (graphic design and illustration). The last couple of years have been really hectic with Soma and I haven't had any time to do much at all really. So I plan to sort out a studio of some sort and get back into it later on this year.

Any other info you'd like to share...
My personal website is www.fiona-hamilton.co.uk. Watch this space I'm going to put some new work on it!
