Uffie - not a name you hear every day, but definitely not a name you forget. Four years after her debut single 'Pop the Glock'; Uffie is back with her debut album - the intriguingly titled 'Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans'
You were born in the US, lived in Hong Kong, and are now based in Paris. In amongst all this travelling - where would you say your favourite place was?
I am very bad at choosing favourites! I love each place for different things... but my top places are definitely New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Australia and Italy.
What is your first/clearest childhood memory?
I used to sit in the kitchen banging pots and pans to make noise, and playing with my talking Big Bird.
We've read that your dad gave you the nickname 'Uffie' and it stands for egg. If you could have chosen your own nickname, what would you have called yourself?
Uffie!
How do you think you've changed since becoming a mother?
It definitely brings a lot more stability to life; things are much more organised and balanced now.
What three albums could you not live without and why?
A Best of Nina Simone - I love her. The soul and that voice... Wow! The last Franz Ferdinand album (Tonight: Franz Ferdinand) because I am somewhat obsessed with it at the moment. Sound of Silver – LCD Soundsystem... Genius!
Who are your musical influences?
Too many to name; also it changes all of the time.
Your album is called Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans - do you think the two are related?
This album is the chronicle of my youth, and this title just summed it up for me. Denim is the fabric of casual rebellion, and sex is an important part of adolescence, as are dreams.
You've been compared to female '80s MCs such as the ladies of L'Trim and Salt-N-Pepa, and you've said 'MCs Can Kiss', so who do you think would kiss better, you or them?
Wouldn't know until I tried! I am playing with Salt-N-Pepa this summer at a festival in London, maybe I will find out.
Your three favourite movies:
Donnie Darko - This movie never gets old for me and the soundtrack is great. Lord of War - Nicholas Cage is one of my favourite actors and this story is brilliantly depicted. Running with Scissors - It's a really touching story, and the actors are great!
Your three favourite foods:
SUSHI
SUSHI
and SUSHI! I somewhat live off the stuff.
Describe your style:
Class vs. Trash.
Do you dress for style or comfort?
Both are necessary.
Who or what influences you?
My mood, the weather, and my destination.
What do you never leave home without?
Sunglasses.
